Adam Hollioake says Kent players 'deserve all credit' for promotion

Kent began the 2026 campaign with two draws and an innings defeat by Worcestershire, leaving the squad and coaching staff under pressure early in the season. From that difficult position, the side won eight of their subsequent 11 Championship matches to secure promotion to Division One. Reflecting on the turnaround, coach Adam Hollioake praised his players and expressed his lack of belief in both himself and his team after the early results.

"I wasn't confident at all last year and even after three games this year, I was questioning myself as a coach and I think all the players were questioning themselves as well, so it's been a pretty remarkable turnaround and credit to all the players for the way they've responded," Hollioake told the BBC.

How did Kent turn their 2026 season around?

Sam Northeast led the batting with 890 Championship runs in 2026. The seam attack was driven by Matt Milnes, who took 54 wickets as Kent's leading bowler, while Keith Dudgeon contributed 42 wickets as the second-leading seamer. Durham finished first in Division Two with nine wins from 13 matches, while Northamptonshire ended third with five wins from 13, confirming Kent's runners-up position. Hollioake acknowledged the players' response to that poor start as the defining factor.

"Their ability this year to go out and execute the plans and pick themselves up, after what was a really tough start to the season, has been the main reason for our turnaround and our success," he added.

What does promotion mean for Kent going forward?

Kent's promotion returns them to Division One after back-to-back seasons in the second tier. Hollioake described a sense of relief at having the achievement confirmed. The head coach, who appeared in four Tests and 35 one-day internationals for England during his playing career, was measured about what comes next.

"I feel like we've been working towards it for a while and I've been quietly confident for a while, but I think it's just a nice relief to have it actually done. The work begins now when we get up to Division One. We'll enjoy this but we've got to keep on improving," he said.
