Tom Curran set to join Brisbane Heat for 2026-27 Big Bash League

Tom Curran has been confirmed as Brisbane Heat's first international recruit for the 2026-27 Big Bash League season, signing a one-year deal with the club. The announcement came after the contracting embargo was lifted on August 27, allowing franchises to make direct signings.

Curran arrives at the Gabba having previously represented two other clubs. He played for the Sydney Sixers before moving to the Melbourne Stars, making Brisbane Heat his third BBL franchise. Across 52 career games in the Big Bash, he has taken 72 wickets at an average of 20.61. In his most recent campaign with the Melbourne Stars, he claimed 16 wickets in 10 appearances.

Beyond the BBL, Curran is a three-format England international who has featured in 290 T20 matches, accumulating 2,705 runs at a strike rate of 145.89 with a highest score of 67 not out, alongside 297 wickets at an economy rate of 8.83.

Why did Brisbane Heat sign Tom Curran?

Brisbane Heat coach James Hopes has a prior working relationship with Curran, having coached him at Delhi Capitals in the IPL. That familiarity appears central to the recruitment, with Hopes pointing to Curran's character and influence within a squad environment as key factors in the decision. He also highlighted Curran's batting value, comparing him to all-rounder Michael Neser.

"We’re very pleased to sign a player with Tom’s skill level and experience. He’s fiercely competitive and from my experience coaching him at Delhi in the IPL, he lifts the other players around him through his energy, drive and focus." Hopes said in an official statement.

"Batting wise, he is very similar to Michael Neser in the way he can influence a game by managing the innings, either counter-attacking himself or getting the best out of his partner," he added.

What does Curran bring to the Heat's BBL|16 campaign?

Curran's familiarity with Australian conditions and venues is considered an asset for the Heat's playing group. His experience across two previous BBL clubs means he arrives with a clear understanding of what the competition demands.

"I’ve been watching him in action last week for the Edinburgh team in the new Euro League where he has taken 10 wickets in four games so far, and I am sure he will enjoy bowling for us at the Gabba. Tom’s BBL experience with the Sixers and Stars is a bonus as he knows the Australian venues and conditions very well which will undoubtedly benefit our playing group," Hopes said.
